International aspects of my work by Juliet Lyons, here

Juliet Lyons - Senior Associate - Children & Young People

Juliet is a Child Counsellor with a passion for supporting families' emotional wellbeing. She works with parents and children of all ages, providing skilled emotional support and guidance. She works with individuals, children or family groups, including parent-child psychotherapy.

You may want to consider counselling if your child is showing signs of distress at home or school or if as a parent/s you are struggling in your relationship with your child.

Juliet completed an MA in Integrative Child Psychotherapy at the Institute of Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE). Her integrative training combines psychodynamic, humanistic, play and art therapies. With young children in particular, she encourages the use of arts as a way to express and explore feelings. She has an interest in Jungian psychology, is a baby massage instructor and a school counsellor.

Juliet brings 10 years experience working with children and parents in nurseries, for Sure Start, in schools and with learning disabilities. She also has BAs in Fine Art (Byam Shaw School of Art) and History of Art (Cambridge University). She has completed a six-month psychiatric placement with the NHS and is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and is registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

Kati Mencer - Associate - Children

Kati is a Child Counsellor, specialised in play therapy, working with children 3-11 years of age. She has practiced in New York mainly with the very young and is currently a school counsellor in schools in West London.

Play therapy is an effective intervention for children with a variety difficulties, such as displaying behaviour that is regarded as a problem by parents or in school, children who may be difficult to control, lack confidence, insecure, withdrawn, anxious, or who have experienced loss through bereavement, loss of a pet, family breakdown, divorce or moving to London and finding it very difficult to adjust. Kati works with the child in a non-directive way, allowing the child to explore their emotions in a safe and trusting environment. Kati also works with the parents separately to help them to form stronger relationship with their child.

Kati absolutely adores children and is passionate about their well-being. Kati has more than 15 years of experience with working with children and families as a Montessori practitioner, head of school and teacher trainer. She also trained as a child Parent Relationship Therapy Facilitator to promote better relationships between the child and her care-givers. Kati is a member of the BPS (British Psychological Society), holds an MSc in Counselling, BA in Education and Montessori Diploma.

Camilla Sim - Senior Associate - Adolescents

I have been working as a psychotherapist with children, adolescents and adults for over 20 years – both in schools and in private practise. I understand the stresses and tensions of family life and the pressure young people experience from school, peers and social media. Life is challenging for us all at times and therapy can help explore things that feel overwhelming or confusing.

I’m particularly interested in working with traumatic experiences, which often underlie feelings of anxiety and depression. These experiences could be major traumas like a car crash or an emergency medical procedure or something more subtle, but just as traumatic, like bullying, social humiliation, rejection or witnessing an accident. Usually our brains can make sense of these experiences and we move on from them. However, sometimes we get stuck and the experiences can overwhelm us through nightmares, anxious, repetitive thoughts or physical sensations that feel like we’re experiencing the trauma all over again. These experiences often lead to changes in behaviour or unexplained symptoms. I use EMDR which is a safe and scientifically validated method for working with trauma.

I also use Focusing which is a way of listening and tuning in to our intuition or what our body wants to say. If we take the time to make space for this ‘felt sense’ of a situation, we often gain a new perspective or see a next step, however small, that we can take. Both EMDR and Focusing are based on the premise that the body, given the right support, can naturally heal itself.

I appreciate how hard it can be for parents to realise that despite all their best efforts, their child needs professional help and usually I would meet with them first to gain an understanding of their family background and to explore their concerns about their child. However, in some cases, I am happy to see a young person without meeting their parents, if that feels more appropriate.
