Mindfulness and Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)

Mindfulness assumes that when we pay attention to how we are experiencing ourselves in the present moment we are better able to identify negative and repeating patterns of unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. The act of practicing mindfulness has been found in clinical trials to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Mindfulness is a technique that can be taught or learnt through classes, books, online studies and is also a specific focus for mediation teachings. Therapists often integrate Mindfulness into their work and several specific approaches have developed including Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). In MBCT cognitive therapy is combined with Mindfulness techniques including breathing, stretching and meditation.
